Lavonia Police Explorers Go To Winterfest 2006

The Lavonia Police Explorer Post 313 of the Northeast Georgia Council recently attended Winterfest 2006 held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee January 27th through 29th.

Winterfest hosts competitive events for explorer posts from 15 southeastern states. Attendance at this year's conference was estimated at more than 2200, the largest in many recent years. The Lavonia post competed with 45 other posts in law enforcement competitions such as high risk warrant service, DUI field sobriety, accident investigation, suspicious person, room search, and uniform competition. Some of the non-law enforcement competitions were archery, water basketball, volleyball, kayaking, scuba diving, lip sync competition, rope climbing, boulder climbing, and several other events.

Lt. Brooks Moorhead, Advisor for the post said, "I'm very proud of the explorers for their hard work and training in preparation for this competition.” The explorer post provides young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 with practical exercises in the field of law enforcement. They also have fun and enjoy the comradeship with fellow explorers.

Police Chief Randy Shirley said that he is equally proud of the explorers for all they achieved during the conference, as well as the superior leadership Lt. Moorhead contributes to the post throughout the year. Shirley said, "The curriculum fosters a positive cultivation of building character, maturity, and leadership abilities. Winterfest 2006 was a manifestation of each of those traits."
